About the Artist

The artist describes her work as inspired by nature and the human form. “Moving beyond a likeness I try to capture a spirit and mood, keeping my paintings alive, spontaneous, fresh and ever-evolving.” Working in oil and also in pastel, her exquisite landscapes, still lifes and portraits are an expression of her unique vision.

Sandra Gorman was born and raised in New York City and has been painting since childhood. She graduated from New York University, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees and was encouraged by her teachers to study art. She went on to receive formal training in drawing, painting and sculpture at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League.

Sandra says, “Painting is a passion for me; and I am always experimenting and enjoy taking my painting in new directions.” She is multi-talented, gaining praise for her efforts in diverse mediums, including sculpture.

Ms. Gorman is represented in a number of private collections in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Montana, Mexico and South Africa. She won a prized Belle Levine Arts Center Award early in her career for a striking pastel portrait. The Belle Levine Arts Center is located in Mahopac, N.Y. where Sandra and her family have a lakeside retreat.

When Sandra participated in a show at the Sundance Gallery, her paintings and pastels were reviewed in Dan’s Papers by Marion Wolberg Weiss: “These interesting positionings not only draw us into the works but also extend the canvas to include space which lies beyond what we can see.” Ms. Gorman was interviewed for a Long Island cable TV show featuring work from the Sundance Gallery.

As an accomplished artist Sandra was invited to speak by the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee where she gave a slide presentation of her paintings. Sandra is frequently commissioned to paint portraits, and recently had one of her portraits in a full length feature film.

Sandra Gorman lives and works in Manhattan. She is married to Dr. David Gorman, who displays her paintings throughout his office, much to the enjoyment of his patients. They have two daughters, both of whom are artists.
